An Ancient Art of Divination
Have you ever stared into the bottom of your coffee cup and wondered if the symbols drawn by the coffee had meaning?
The coffee cup reading or tasseography is a revered and ancient art that blends intuition, symbolism, and storytelling. This practice is believed to reveal hidden truths about the future or offer guidance through the patterns left by coffee grounds. For many, it is a way to seek clarity in times of uncertainty, or simply to embrace the magic of the unknown
Also known as Tasseography, this method is believed to have originated in the Middle East and Turkey likely during the 16th century and coincided with the rise of coffee as a cultural staple. The method gained popularity in Turkey, where drinking Turkish coffee became a daily ritual. Over time, the practice spread throughout Europe, particularly to countries like Greece and the Balkans, and evolved into an art form deeply embedded in social and spiritual traditions.
The main difference between Turkish coffee and regular coffee lies in the preparation, texture, and flavor. Turkish coffee is known to be quite strong and thick with a grainy mouthfeel. It is that thick coffee grounds we read. After drinking the coffee, the remaining grounds form intricate shapes that are interpreted as signs or omens. Each symbol carries its own meaning: a bird might represent freedom, a circle could symbolize unity, and a heart might foretell love or emotional matters. The symbols can hold deep personal significance; by paying close attention, you might find meaningful shapes in your daily cup of coffee. For instance, a letter could represent the initial of someone's name, or a symbol associated with a country might suggest travel to that destination if it resonates with you.

I’m thrilled to invite you to an enchanting day of discovery and fortune telling in Montreal! Our upcoming Fortune Telling Event happening December 1st will feature coffee cup reading, Tarot and Palmistry. This is your chance to experience this ancient art firsthand, guided by Joseph.
Joseph is a medium and has been reading coffee cups since he was a child as it was part of his family tradition. Coffee cup reading is a deeply rooted Egyptian tradition. Since his childhood, coffee cup reading has been a cherished Egyptian tradition in his family, passed down by his grandmother. She would carefully guide him through the process, showing him how the coffee grounds formed symbols that held deeper meanings. It was a mystical ritual that connected Joseph to his culture and to past generations and each reading felt like a link to something ancient and meaningful.
